Yes, he can answer to the (call of) azan. There is nothing wrong answering to the azan while eating but it’s not necessary. Rasool sallallahu alaihi wa sallam use to have necessary conversation while eating as is mentioned in the hadeeth shareef.-SohIhul bukharI, hadeeth no 5377; SohIh muslim, hadeeth no 5389.
